Susila Dharma Indonesia, Planet Water, And J.P. Morgan Provide Clean Water After Merapi In Indonesia

On the international observance of World Water Day, Susila Dharma Indonesia - supported by Susila Dharma International Association - collaborates with Planet Water Foundation, who is sponsored by J.P. Morgan to deliver clean water to victims of the recent volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi. Using funding from a 2010 grant provided by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation, Susila Dharma Indonesia and Planet Water Foundation worked together to install water filtration systems at five locations in affected communities around Mount Merapi, which will enable local residents to access clean water for the first time since the catastrophic volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi.

The filtration systems will produce up to 10,000 liters of potable water per day by removing bacteria and other harmful contaminants. Each unit will supply the local community with clean water for many years and requires minimal maintenance by each community, pointed by local village chair and headmaster.

Installation of the first water tower at Kintelan Elementary School was completed in December 2010. The installation of the remaining four towers was completed on March 18, 2011. The four locations receiving clean water systems were:

• Ngablak Elementary School and Kindergarten, Srumburg Sub-District, Magelang
• Sengi 2 Elementary School and Kindergarten, Dukun Sub-District, Magelang
• Bawukan Elementary School, Kemalang Sub-District, Klaten
• Sukorame 2 Elementary School and Kindergarten, Musuk Sub-District

Planet Water’s education program on Water-Health & Hygiene was also implemented to ensure that children in each school understand the importance of good hygiene practices.

For the next term, we plan to install more 20 water filtration systems across Indonesia, especially areas which affected natural disaster and require clean water, such as Nusa Tenggara. We are currently fundraising so that communities in Indonesia can easily access clean water.

Ruth Setyabudi, Branch Manager, J.P. Morgan Indonesia said, “J.P. Morgan is committed to investing in our communities around the world. Indonesia is an important market for us and we are pleased to participate in rebuilding the affected communities following Mount Merapi's eruption.” Setyabudi noted that the Merapi project is one of many community investment programs that J.P. Morgan is funding in Asia. She added, "Supporting water sanitation projects and clean water education are integral to the firm's regional outreach in 2011."

Mark Steele, Founder & CEO, Planet Water Foundation said, “Our goal is to alleviate water poverty in the world’s most disadvantaged communities through sustainable, clean water solutions and education programs on water-health & hygiene. Partnering with J.P. Morgan and Susila Dharma Indonesia on these emergency response projects in the affected communities around Mount Merapi helps us to achieve this goal with maximum impact.

Ariana Susanti, Founder of Susila Dharma Indonesia, said, "Our focus is on community development and health education across Indonesia. The damage caused by the recent Merapi eruption has made the basic need of having clean water nearly impossible for the people in the Merapi communities to find. Our partnership with Planet Water will enable us to provide clean, safe water to those affected by the eruption, and also educate the local communities on the importance of clean water.

We were proud to see how enthusiastic the community was to receive this machine. A student in Sukorame even read a poem about the benefit of the filtration system and how they will take care of it."

According to published reports, over 100 million people in Indonesia lack access to safe water, and more than 70 percent of the population relies on water obtained from potentially contaminated sources. Unsafe drinking water is a major cause of diarrhea, which is the second leading killer of children under age five and accounts for about 20 percent of child deaths each year. Every year, at least 300 out of 1,000 Indonesians suffer from water-borne diseases, including cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever.
